All the Dirt Book Launch

by admin on January 24, 2012

We’re so darned excited about this book, and about this book launch.  We’re also very grateful to Spinnakers.  When we asked them if they might consider hosting this event, this is what Ali said: “Are you kidding?  We’d love to!  That’s what we’re all about!”  So please come enjoy some music and some nibbles.  Buy a beer and maybe a book, and spend a couple hours with our wonderful community of farmers and friends.

Support for Sustainable Agriculture

December 4, 2011

I’m at the tail end of a lovely couple of weeks in North Carolina where I’ve been visiting family.  I spend time here each winter, and I generally think of the political culture as quite conservative.  I would not assume that an environmentally sustainable local food culture would be high on the agenda in this [...]

We’ve come a long way, baby!

November 30, 2011

I felt such blessed validation when I brought in an order of mixed kale and chard to Cook Culture yesterday and had about 10 people gathered round, oohing and ahhing about how beautiful it was, asking where they could get more.  Ten years ago, it seemed that people would cringe and gag or at least [...]

Saanich Organics Endorses Bryson for Mayor

November 8, 2011

It’s baffling and saddening that municipal elections have lower voter turnout than federal elections.  Local politics affect our day to day lives and the future of our communities, so get out there and vote! Most of the Saanich Organics farmers live in Central Saanich, and we are pleased to endorse Alastair Bryson for mayor.  Alastair [...]

A hero in our midst: Lana Popham

October 25, 2011

Take a look at our agriculture critic standing up for the ALR in question period. www.bcagcritic.blogspot.com It wasn’t so long ago that Lana was a farmer with Saanich Organics.  During work parties she used to rant and rave about pesticide application, development on farmland, and finding innovative ways to make farming viable.  While we’re still [...]

Food, Farmers and Climate Chaos!

October 8, 2011

This coming Tuesday, October 11th at 12:10, we’re proud to be hosting Wilhelmina Pelegrina, an agronomist and farmer activist from the Philippines.  She works closely with farmers in South East Asia who are like the canaries in the coal mine in terms of their vulnerability to climate change.  Fortunately, their creativity and amazing resilience has [...]

With Kids

September 20, 2011

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard “Isn’t that wonderful that your kids are growing up on a farm.”  And it is.  And sometimes it isn’t.  Sometimes I feel like neither the farm nor the kids get as much of my undivided attention as they deserve.  In the late summer and [...]

“Local” Bait and Switch

September 7, 2011

I’m steamed. Many retailers in the Victoria area realize that the public is increasingly interested in our local food system.  Many consumers seek out local food because they know it’s an important way to grow the local economy, to reduce the carbon footprint of transporting food, to strengthen food security, and to resist development on [...]

Four Prize Winners Crowned in 3rd Annual Zucchini Bake-off

August 26, 2011

We take our zucchini bake-off quite seriously at Saanich Organics. Our delivery driver, Tim, spent the whole day gathering plums and blackberries for the fruit sauce topping for his zucchini crepes.  Mik biked out from town precariously balancing a zucchini upside-down cake.  Lindsay bravely pushed the envelope and entered her zucchini ice-cream.  The room was [...]

Tomatoes, peppers and eggplant are finally ripening. Its time for toasted tomato sandwiches, greek salad and roasted peppers on the BBQ. Its been a long haul with these plants this year.  From late frosts to soggy cold soil to unseasonally cool weather, these plants have triumphed over the elements. Come load up at the [...]

Melons… Good News and Bad News

August 13, 2011

The melons are starting to ripen, but there’s a catch:  The ravens have noticed.  These “feathered friends” have been merrily hopping through the melon patch for the last couple of days pecking many many melons, then feasting when they find a ripe one.  This is particularly frustrating because we thought this was a problem we [...]

We have both blueberries and strawberries on our roadside stand!  1438 Mt Newton Xrd.  We can’t guarantee they’ll be there every day for the rest of the season, but we’ll sure try.  And we’re open for U-Pick blueberries… just bring change, read the sign, and enjoy some fresh air, sunshine, and fabulous organic berries.

Taste Test – First Saanich Organics Melon of 2011

August 2, 2011

The first melon of 2011 at Northbrook Farm. This melon is a Galia variety, with green flesh, but it tastes similar to a cantaloupe. It’s super sweet and juicy and we’ll be bringing some more of these to Moss St. Market and James Bay Market in Victoria in the next couple of weeks!!
